WFP: Ending U.S. Aid to Yemen Could Be a “Death Sentence” for Millions

Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:

Sources in the humanitarian aid sector have revealed that U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration is ending most, if not all, remaining US aid to Yemen—an action the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has warned could amount to a “death sentence” for millions of Yemenis.

According to Reuters, U.S. officials stated that this move is part of broader foreign aid cuts affecting several countries, with Yemen seeing $107 million in aid withdrawn.

The WFP warned that ending U.S. funding for emergency food assistance “could deepen the suffering of millions already facing extreme hunger and famine.” The organization confirmed it is in contact with the Trump administration to seek further clarification.

Cindy McCain, Executive Director of the WFP, stated that the funding cuts “will exacerbate the humanitarian crisis in Yemen and contribute to greater instability.”

The US had been one of the largest donors of humanitarian assistance to Yemen, a country ravaged by years of war and where the Houthi group controls large portions of territory.

A letter from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) indicated that the decision to end aid to Yemen followed a review of the administration’s priorities, under the directive of Jeremy Louwen, Acting Assistant Administrator at USAID.

This move is part of a broader campaign by the Trump administration to decrease foreign aid, raising concerns over worsening humanitarian crises in conflict-affected regions like Yemen.
