Saudi Masam Project: Houthis Continue Planting Mines Despite Demining Efforts

Yemen Monitor/Newsroom:
Osama Al-Qassibi, Director of the Saudi “Masam” Project for Landmine Clearance in Yemen, criticized the stance of some countries and international organizations that have halted their support for humanitarian projects aimed at combating landmines in Yemen.
This came in a speech on the occasion of the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action, where he affirmed that the Houthis continue to plant indiscriminate mines intensively in various parts of the country, posing a significant threat to civilians.
Al-Qusaibi explained that for every mine that is removed, dozens are planted by the Houthi militia, which increases the challenges facing the “Masam” teams in their work.
Since the project’s establishment in mid-2018, the teams have succeeded in removing more than 486,000 explosive devices, including anti-personnel and anti-tank mines, and improvised explosive devices.
He pointed out that “Masam” project, funded by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, continues its relentless efforts to ensure the safety of civilians in Yemen, despite the international reluctance to support these projects at a time when the Yemeni people are suffering from the Houthi crimes.
