Yemeni Health Minister: Polio Outbreak in Houthi-Controlled Areas Poses Serious Threat

The Minister of Health in the Yemeni government, Qasim Buhaibih, confirmed that the spread of polio cases poses a real danger to liberated areas, as infections are increasing in Houthi-controlled regions.

This came during a meeting of the Supreme Committee for Health Emergencies yesterday, Wednesday, in the interim capital Aden, to discuss the epidemiological situation of polio cases, with the participation of experts from the World Health Organization and UNICEF, according to the official Yemeni news agency.

The Minister of Health stressed the importance of raising community health awareness to achieve effective prevention, noting that the ministry and its partners are working to implement measures to confront the outbreak of epidemic diseases, foremost among them polio.

The Yemeni Minister called for concerted efforts between the ministry and its partners to strengthen immunization campaigns, especially in high-risk areas, and to work to cover gaps to address any future threats.

He stressed the need to intensify awareness messages and create an effective community partnership, pointing to the importance of analyzing the health situation, identifying weaknesses, and developing an integrated plan to enhance protection against polio and other epidemic diseases.

The meeting also addressed the modes of transmission of the virus and ways to combat it, with a focus on achieving the highest immunization rate for targeted children and closing gaps in the spread.
