Yemeni President: Iran Seeks to Control the Red Sea

Yemen Monitor/Newsroom:
The Head of the Yemeni Presidential Leadership Council, Rashad Muhammad Al-Alimi, stated that Iran is working on a long-term strategy to control the Red Sea and threaten the interests of the entire world, through its support for the Houthis and Al-Qaeda.
President Al-Alimi added in an interview with the newspaper “Der Spiegel”: “The Houthis want to blackmail the world by threatening waterways and disguise their sabotage with misleading political justifications. Behind this lies the grand Iranian vision to control the Red Sea, as an old plan, and the Houthis are its tools of implementation.”
He said that “the Iranian military support that used to go to the Syrian regime and Hezbollah is now being directed largely to the Houthis, including the appointment of Revolutionary Guard commanders as ambassadors to the Houthis in Sana’a.”
The Yemeni President pointed out that Iranian investment in the Houthi group may now be higher than what Hezbollah and Hassan Nasrallah previously received.
Al-Alimi stressed the need for the international community to bear its responsibilities towards Yemen, in light of Iranian threats and Houthi attacks on international maritime navigation.
President Al-Alimi called on the international community to join the punitive measures against the Houthi militias and classify them as a global terrorist organization, stressing that this is the way to secure the Red Sea and defeat the axis of evil that includes Iran, the Houthis, and Al-Qaeda.
President Al-Alimi also emphasized the importance of supporting the Yemeni government economically and developmentally, as well as its security capabilities in the field of coast guard, in order to enable it to play its role in securing freedom of maritime navigation.
