Socotra, a Threatened Paradise…Foreign Tourist Warns of Increasing Emirati Investment in the Island

Yemen Monitor/Newsroom:
Isabel Musk, an expert in tourism strategies, revealed her exceptional journey to the Yemeni island of Socotra, highlighting its unique natural beauty and exceptional biodiversity, but at the same time warning of external threats looming over this paradise.
Socotra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, attracted Isabel due to its unparalleled rich biodiversity, including the legendary Dragon’s Blood Tree and the Detwah Lagoon protected under the Ramsar Convention. Isabel added that the island offers a rich cultural experience thanks to its unique language and traditions.
Despite its stunning beauty, the growth of tourism in Socotra raises some concerns. The number of visitors has increased from 150 in 2010 to about 3,500 visitors annually today, a sharp increase since 2022. The island’s capacity is estimated to accommodate a maximum of between 4,000 and 5,000 visitors annually without affecting its environment.
Musk warned of the increasing Emirati investment in the island, which is represented by the purchase of land through local intermediaries, despite the official ban on selling land to foreigners.
She stressed the importance of sustainable tourism in Socotra, emphasizing the need to align tourism with the needs of the local community and the environment.
She called for supporting small tour operators, respecting the environment, and meeting the desires of local communities to protect this paradise from external threats and preserve its unique heritage.
