Yemeni Foreign Minister: We Hope to End the War Through Negotiations

Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:

Yemeni Foreign Minister Shay’e Al-Zindani affirmed that the Yemeni government hopes to end the war through negotiations, but if forced to return to the military option, it will do so.

In an interview with Al-Arabi Al-Jadeed, Al-Zindani reiterated that the UN roadmap for ending the war in Yemen remains valid, despite the political and international changes that have affected it.

He emphasized that the Yemeni government is making efforts to reach a political solution, but it is also prepared for a military option if no other alternative exists.

Al-Zindani stated that the war does not serve the interests of Yemen or its people, but rather benefits the Houthi militia, which receives Iranian support.

Regarding the possibility of U.S. involvement in Yemen’s peace roadmap and linking the resumption of negotiations to a halt in Houthi attacks in the Red Sea, Al-Zindani said:

“The Yemeni government maintains communication with the U.S. administration, the EU, the UK, and the coalition countries. Efforts are being made, but differences have emerged. For instance, the EU, which had previously taken a relatively lenient stance towards the Houthis, has now shifted its position, as has the US.”

He added:

“Ultimately, launching any political process to achieve peace depends primarily on the Houthis’ behavior—whether they are willing to accept a political solution, disarm, and become a political entity like others. Peace is not just a desire; it is also a matter of actions and commitments.”

Al-Zindani confirmed that there is ongoing communication with UN Special Envoy Hans Grundberg regarding the revival of the roadmap, but he stressed that the envoy cannot achieve progress alone—strong political will from influential international powers and the UN Security Council is required.

He also acknowledged that the Yemeni government is facing a severe economic crisis and is working to improve the situation by enhancing state efficiency, increasing revenue collection, and improving financial policies.
