U.S. State Department: Trump Administration Fulfills Promise to Designate Houthis as a “Foreign Terrorist Organization”

Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:

The U.S. State Department confirmed that President Donald Trump’s administration has fulfilled its promise to designate the Houthi group as a “Foreign Terrorist Organization,” following the official implementation of this designation.

In a brief statement on “X”, the State Department clarified that the designation was made in response to the hundreds of attacks launched by the Houthis on commercial ships in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.

The statement added that this decision is part of the Trump administration’s commitment to protecting U.S. national security interests.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Central Command reported that since 2023, the Houthis have carried out attacks on international commercial vessels and U.S. forces in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, causing severe economic damage and increasing global trade costs by forcing ships to take longer routes around Africa.

Late last month, the U.S. officially designated the Houthi group as a Foreign Terrorist Organization, fulfilling one of the key promises made by President Donald Trump since taking office.

A day later, the U.S. Treasury Department announced new sanctions related to the Yemeni Houthi movement, targeting seven senior leaders of the Iran-aligned group.
