Grundberg: The Risk Of Military Escalation Inside Yemen Is Increasing

Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:

UN envoy to Yemen Hans Grundberg said on Tuesday that peace in Yemen is possible, even in the most difficult times, but it requires continuous effort, a unified will, and an unwavering determination.

He said in a speech during the closing session of the Third Yemen International Forum, the challenges facing Yemen today are enormous.

He added: Perhaps the most prominent of these challenges is the continuing decline of civil space, and the arbitrary arrests that targeted UN staff, civil society, the diplomatic corps, and the private sector, along with the tragedy of the death of a World Food Program employee while in detention, reveal the growing risks and the shrinking space available to those seeking to support Yemenis.

He said that such actions threaten fundamental rights, undermine trust, and hinder peace efforts. These practices must be stopped, and accountability must be ensured.

He continued: This is why it was important for the Security Council to send a strong and unified message condemning the death of our colleague.

He stressed that the way forward is not easy. The risk of military escalation inside Yemen is increasing, which threatens to exacerbate suffering and hinder peace efforts.

He added: The humanitarian crisis is also intensifying, and political divisions still exist.
