Local Conference Holds STC Responsible for Deteriorating Conditions in Socotra

Yemen Monitor/Newsroom:

The Socotra National Conference said on Tuesday that it is following with concern the deteriorating situation in the Socotra archipelago.

In a statement, it reported that it is following the deteriorating conditions in the Socotra Archipelago Governorate and the continuous decline day after day, as a result of the absence of state and local authority oversight and the inability to limit the manipulation of fuel prices and their increase without any acceptable or logical justification.

The statement accused the STC authority of not putting in place alternatives that would guarantee the prevention of a single investor’s monopoly, who does not abide by any law, does not pay the taxes and customs duties owed to the state, and imposes exorbitant prices, which led to the price of a 20-liter jerrycan of diesel and gasoline reaching 44,000 riyals and gas to 27,500 riyals, which exacerbated the living situation and caused suffering to our people in the Socotra archipelago.

The statement denounced the position of the local authority in the governorate regarding what is happening in the governorate, holding it responsible for provoking the feelings of citizens by raising prices excessively, as well as obstructing the governorate’s supply of Yemeni petrol and gas and preventing its import to the governorate from Hadramout, which suggests that the local authority is a key partner in this dilemma.

The statement called on the local authority to urgently resolve this crisis by supplying the governorate with oil derivatives and gas at reasonable prices and finding other investors committed to providing derivatives and subject to oversight and accountability in the event of default.
