Yemen and China Sign Two Agreements of Understanding to Strengthen Development and Security Cooperation

Yemen Monitor/Newsroom:

Yemen and China signed two agreements of understanding on Monday in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, aimed at strengthening development and security cooperation between the two countries. Under one of the agreements, Yemen joins the Global Development Initiative launched by Chinese President Xi Jinping.

The first agreement, signed by the Yemeni Minister of Planning and International Cooperation, Waed Badhib, and the Chargé d’Affaires of the Chinese Embassy to Yemen, Shao Zheng, includes a comprehensive framework for development cooperation, focusing on poverty reduction, promoting food security, developing the public health sector, supporting industrial transformation, as well as addressing the challenges of climate change and green development, and building human capacity in the digital age.

Under the agreement, China will provide development support to Yemen that includes grants and interest-free loans, in addition to providing funding from the Global Development Fund, and establishing a joint dialogue mechanism to hold periodic meetings aimed at coordinating policies and exchanging experiences, according to the official Yemeni news agency.

The second agreement relates to equipment and supplies for the Yemeni police, where China will provide a grant that includes a batch of police equipment to support the Yemeni Ministry of Interior, with its transfer to the port of Mukalla as part of the free aid provided to Yemen.

These agreements reflect the continued Chinese support for Yemen in the areas of development and security, in light of the Yemeni government’s efforts to strengthen international partnerships and achieve economic stability.
