Yemen Monitor/Amman/Special:
The Supreme Authority for Medicines and Medical Supplies, affiliated with the Houthis, signed an agreement of understanding with the Jordanian Food and Drug Administration on Sunday in Amman to enhance technical cooperation and joint coordination.
This is considered an implicit recognition by the Jordanian government of the Houthi government, which is not recognized internationally. This comes after a campaign by the Yemeni government to confirm the smuggling and counterfeiting of medicines by the group’s leadership in Sana’a, causing medical crimes.
Houthi media said that the memorandum of understanding, signed by “the head of the authority, Ali Muhammad Abbas, and the director of the Jordanian Food and Drug Administration, Dr. Nizar Mahmoud Mheidat, exchanged technical consultations, experiences, information and knowledge related to the standards, laws, regulations, foundations and legislation adopted in the institution and the promotion of scientific, industrial and technological capabilities.”
This comes at a time when the Houthis are suffering from a lack of international recognition, and two weeks after they were designated as a terrorist organization by the administration of US President Donald Trump.
There has been no comment yet from the Yemeni government, which is based in Aden, or from the Yemeni embassy in Amman, which is under the internationally recognized government.
Houthi media said, “The signing of the Agreement of understanding is considered a first step in the field of joint cooperation, which will be followed by other steps in the adoption of documents such as drug registration and other aspects of common interest.”
