Chinese Navy Foils Pirate Attack on Merchant Ship in the Gulf of Aden

Yemen Monitor/Newsroom:

The Chinese Defense Ministry announced on Thursday that a Chinese Navy vessel prevented a potential pirate attack on a merchant ship in the Gulf of Aden.

According to a statement published by the Chinese Defense Ministry on its official WeChat social media account, a Chinese Navy ship was escorting the merchant ship “Choiceon” as it crossed the Gulf of Aden on February 1st. The warship drove away two small boats that were approaching the merchant vessel and suspected of carrying pirates.

“After a series of warnings and deterrent measures, the two suspected pirate ships were successfully driven away,” the statement said.

China announced last December that it had dispatched a new naval fleet to continue the mission of escorting civilian ships in the Gulf of Aden and waters off Somalia.

The Japanese Defense Ministry, in its annual “Defense White Paper 2024,” did not rule out the risk of a resurgence in piracy in the region if the international community does not take appropriate and stringent measures to combat it.
