Explosion of ‘Hazardous Cargo’ Forces Crew to Abandon Container Ship in the Red Sea
Yemen Monitor/Newsroom:
Maritime sources have reported the rescue of the crew of a Hong Kong-flagged container ship in the southern Red Sea after an explosion caused a fire on board on Tuesday.
The specialized shipping and maritime news website “Tradewinds” reported that the crew of the Chinese ship “ASL Bauhinia” abandoned it after an explosion of a hazardous cargo and a subsequent fire on board.
Diablos Maritime Security stated that the ship, operated by the Asian Seas Line, was adrift in the southern Red Sea, approximately 122 nautical miles (226 km) northwest of Hodeidah, Yemen, while on a voyage north towards the Suez Canal.
Diablos said the ship experienced an explosion while sailing north through the Red Sea, resulting in a large fire that forced the crew to abandon ship, according to shipping industry officials.
The security company Ambry said it understood that the fire was “linked to an explosion involving a hazardous cargo.”
The Associated Press reported that the ship was abandoned and the crew was later rescued without injury.
Reuters explained that another ship rescued the crew and that its members were safe, without providing further details about the causes of the explosion, the size of the fire, its losses, the condition of the ship, or the position of its owner.
The Yemeni Houthi group stated last week that its attacks would be limited to Israeli-owned ships until the full implementation of all stages of the ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip.
