Steps the US Government Will Take After Designating the Houthis as a Terrorist Organization

Yemen Monitor/Washington/Exclusive:

The White House on Wednesday officially designated the Houthis as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT).

US President Donald Trump’s executive order declares that the U.S.s’ policy is now to eliminate the Houthis’ capabilities and operations, and to deny them the resources needed to continue attacking US interests in the region.

However, there is a 45-day period to prepare for the designation, according to the US order seen by Yemen Monitor. These measures aim “to reduce the Houthis’ ability to conduct operations and deny them resources, thereby contributing to enhanced regional and international security.”

Key Steps:

Report Submission: Within 30 days of the order, the Secretary of State will submit a report to the President, in consultation with the Director of National Intelligence and the Secretary of the Treasury, regarding the designation of “Ansar Allah” as a terrorist organization.

Appropriate Actions: After 15 days of submitting the report, the Secretary of State will take all appropriate actions related to designating the Houthis as a terrorist organization.

Partner Review: Following the designation, the Secretary of State and the USAID Administrator will review partners at the United Nations, non-governmental organizations, and contractors working in Yemen.

Identifying Linked Entities: Any entities with ties to USAID that have paid funds to members or government entities controlled by the Houthi group, or those that have criticized international efforts to counter the Houthis without documenting their violations, will be identified.

Terminating Projects: The USAID Administrator will take appropriate actions to terminate projects, grants, or contracts that have been identified as supporting the Houthis.
