US Discusses Shared Security Concerns over Houthi Escalation with Yemen and Saudi Arabia

The US  has held military talks with Saudi Arabia and the Yemeni government, focusing on security concerns over the escalation of the Houthi group in the Red Sea and the region.

The US Central Command (CENTCOM) stated in a statement posted on X that the commander of US Central Command, General Michael Erik Kurilla, visited US military personnel and met with key leaders in Saudi Arabia from January 11 to 12.

According to the statement, General Kurilla met with General Fayyadh bin Hamed Al-Ruwaili, Chief of Staff of the Saudi Armed Forces, and his senior staff.

The two generals discussed shared security concerns, their mutual commitment to addressing evolving threats in the region, and the importance of joint readiness through interoperability.

General Kurilla and General Al-Ruwaili emphasized the importance of deepening bilateral relations between the two countries, especially through joint military exercises, building consensus and readiness, and capacity-building programs.

The meeting stressed the enduring strategic partnership between the US and Saudi Arabia, which remains a key partner in maintaining regional security, stability, peace, and prosperity.

According to the statement, the US and Saudi Arabia have enjoyed a strategic partnership for over eight decades.

In a separate context, General Kurilla, while in Saudi Arabia, met with Lieutenant General Sagheer Hamoud bin Aziz, Chief of Staff of the Yemeni Armed Forces, who came to Saudi Arabia for this visit.

The two sides discussed efforts to enhance security cooperation and counter regional threats, such as the Iranian-backed Houthis and their attacks on military and commercial vessels in the Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb.

They also discussed strategies to enhance the operational capabilities of the Yemeni Armed Forces. Both sides agreed to continue strengthening the partnership through future meetings.

The meeting affirmed CENTCOM’s commitment to promoting peace, stability, and security throughout the region.
