Yemen Monitor/Newsroom:
ElectroMeka International has announced the suspension of its solar energy project in Ataq, Shabwah Governorate (eastern Yemen), following threats made against its technical team by “influential figures.”
In a memorandum addressed to the Governor of Shabwah and the provincial security director, which was published by local media, the company announced the official suspension of work as of Saturday, January 4, and the “suspension of all ongoing work on the 53-megawatt solar energy project in Ataq, Shabwah.”
The company indicated that it made the decision to preserve the safety and security of its employees, contractors, and project assets “following threats from representatives of the Al Hammami contractor, as harassment and interference aimed at obstructing the progress of the project have been repeated.”
The company confirmed that drivers of trucks carrying project equipment and equipment for transportation work were threatened by Ali Omar al-Hammami with “burning the incoming materials and harming those who carry out the transportation.”
It added, “On the other hand, at the project site, Qaed Abdullah al-Jaberi al-Hammami stopped work at the project site and threatened the engineer Abdullah Marbush if work were to resume.”
The company explained that all these threats have led to “creating an unsafe working environment, making it unsafe for our employees to continue work.”
