Taiz Records 1,474 Cancer Cases in 2024

Yemen Monitor/Newsroom:

A health official in the Ministry of Health office in Taiz governorate said on Saturday that 1,474 cancer cases were recorded in the governorate during 2024.

Tayssir al-Sama’i, the media official in the health office of Taiz governorate, told the German News Agency that breast cancer accounts for nearly a third of the cancer cases recorded in the governorate last year.

Al-Sama’i attributed the causes of cancer to the continued indiscriminate use of pesticides, weak monitoring, and a lack of awareness, as well as the deterioration of the health and humanitarian sector due to the repercussions of the severe war in the country.

Al-Sama’i warned that cancer patients face great suffering due to the high costs of their treatment, the shortage of medical supplies and drugs, and the continued increase in cases in a country facing significant challenges in various aspects of life.

He pointed out that the health sector in Taiz is in dire need of support from international organizations and donors in light of the continued spread of diseases, especially cancer.

Last December, Yemeni Minister of Public Health and Population Qasim Buhibh revealed that the authorities record 30,000 cancer cases annually in the country, stressing the need to adhere to preventive measures against this malignant disease.
