336 Illegal African Migrants Arrive in Shabwah, Eastern Yemen

Yemen Monitor/Newsroom:

The Yemeni Interior Ministry announced the arrival of 336 illegal migrants on the coast of Kida in Radum district, Shabwah governorate (eastern Yemen).

Shabwah governorate police stated that two migrant smuggling boats landed the migrants on the coast of Kida. Among them were 256 Ethiopians, including 103 women, while the remaining 80 migrants were Somalis.

The police indicated that they had gathered the illegal migrants for legal procedures.

Tens of thousands of African migrants undertake a perilous journey each year on the “Eastern Route” across the Red Sea and Yemen to reach Saudi Arabia, fleeing conflicts or natural disasters, or seeking better economic opportunities.

In April, two boats sank off the coast of Djibouti within two weeks, killing dozens.

Since 2014, the International Organization for Migration’s Missing Migrants Project has recorded 1,860 deaths and disappearances among migrants along the Eastern Route from East Africa and the Horn of Africa to the Gulf States, including 480 due to drowning.

In May, the International Organization for Migration said that despite the many risks of the Eastern Route, the number of migrants arriving in Yemen each year “tripled between 2021 and 2023, increasing from about 27,000 to more than 90,000.”
