Yemeni Fishermen Appeal to Government for Intervention After Fish Spoilage Due to Export Halt to Saudi Arabia

Yemen Monitor/Agencies:

Yemeni fishermen in Abyan Governorate have appealed to Yemeni Prime Minister Ahmed Awad bin Mubarak and Minister of Agriculture, Water, and Fisheries Salem Abdullah Al-Soqatri to intervene and urgently address the issue of their spoiled fish due to the halt of exports to Saudi Arabia.

In press statements, a large number of fishermen in Shuqra explained that they have over 12 tons of various types of fish stored in Shaqra’s fish market for two days and are at risk of spoiling if the export issue is not resolved.

They indicated that the local market cannot absorb this quantity, and no buyers have come forward to purchase the mentioned fish, due to Saudi Arabia’s halt of imports from Yemen.

The fishermen demanded a swift intervention to resolve this problem, as the losses incurred by the fishermen are significant and burdensome.

For his part, the governor’s deputy, Abdul Aziz al-Hamza, said, “We have seen the boats carrying fish parked in Shaqra’s fish market, and we join the fishermen in calling for a solution to their problem, which will cost them millions in losses.”
