Yemeni Interior Ministry: 663 Killed in Traffic Accidents in the Liberated Areas in 2024

The Yemeni Interior Ministry announced on Monday that traffic accidents in areas liberated from Houthi control claimed the lives of 663 people of various age groups during 2024.

Citing the Director-General of Traffic Police, Omar Bamshmous, the Yemeni Interior Ministry’s security media reported that 2024 witnessed a 30% increase in traffic accident fatalities compared to the previous year, with a total of 4,924 casualties, including 663 deaths and 4,261 injuries, of which 1,532 were classified as severe.

Bamshmous pointed out that the material losses from traffic accidents in the past year amounted more than 5 billion riyals, representing an increase of more than 3 billion, 118 million, and 389 thousand riyals compared to 2023.

Meanwhile, traffic police in the liberated governorates recorded 70,903 traffic violations and 4,764 traffic accidents during the same period.

The distribution of accidents across the governorates varied, with Marib Governorate topping the list with 1,704 accidents, accounting for 35%, followed by Taiz Governorate with 610 accidents and 13%, and Lahj Governorate with 443 accidents and 9%.
