Yemeni Health Minister Reveals Huge Cancer Statistics

Yemen Monitor/Newsroom:

Yemeni Minister of Public Health and Population, Dr. Qasim Buhaibah, revealed on Monday that authorities are recording 30,000 new cancer cases annually in the country. He emphasized the urgent need to adhere to preventive measures against this malignant disease.

In a statement to Al Jazeera Net, Buhaibah said that the spread of cancer has reached alarming levels in Yemen, negatively impacting the already strained health sector, which is grappling with the challenges posed by the ongoing war. He explained that the surge in cancer cases necessitates the development of a comprehensive strategy to combat the disease.

To address this pressing issue, the Yemeni minister announced the official launch in the temporary capital, Aden, on Monday, of the National Cancer Control Strategy for 2025-2030. The strategy outlines several key areas related to the prevalence of cancer in Yemen, its current status, and the priority actions to be taken in the coming years.

Buhaibah further declared that the Ministry of Health will be initiating a series of development projects aimed at combating cancer in Aden and other governorates, emphasizing the importance of collaboration with all governorates to establish cancer treatment centers.

He highlighted the ministry’s efforts to introduce essential vaccines to prevent the spread of diseases, while simultaneously stressing the need to strengthen preventive measures to reduce cancer incidence rates and provide treatment centers to fulfill part of the desired aspirations.
