Child Dies, Others Injured in Fire at a Displacement Camp in Marib

A child died and others were injured on Wednesday in a fire that broke out in one of the displacement camps in Marib Governorate, northeastern Yemen.

The Executive Unit for the Management of Internally Displaced Persons Camps in the governorate reported that “a child died and others were injured in a fire that engulfed a shelter in one of the displacement camps in the governorate.”

Yesterday, Tuesday, an official report stated that the number of newly displaced families to Marib Governorate in October reached 221 families (1,367 individuals).

He pointed to several factors for the displacement of these families from their areas, such as arbitrary arrests, persecutions, child recruitment, and economic reasons, as displaced families seek safety and livelihoods.

The Executive Unit also recorded in its November report 88 families (543 individuals) who moved from rented houses to camps, due to several factors including the accumulation of rents and the inability to meet their obligations and threats of eviction.

It pointed to many challenges that led these families to move from rented houses to camps, including the deteriorating economic situation, the lack of sustainable sources of income, and threats of eviction due to the accumulation of rents and the weak humanitarian response.

The Executive Unit for the Management of Internally Displaced Persons Camps in Marib added that the needs of the displaced include shelter, cash assistance, food, shelter materials, livelihoods, and support for projects to cover the needs of families.

The Executive Unit for the Displaced in Marib called on humanitarian organizations to meet the needs of the displaced quickly, provide sustainable income-generating projects, and support cash assistance projects for families threatened with eviction from rented houses.
