Yemen Monitor/Newsroom:

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) revealed on Wednesday, for the first time, an outbreak of hookworm disease in Hodeidah Governorate, western Yemen.

The international organization’s Yemen office stated that “MSF teams are treating the spread of hookworm disease in the Hawsh Zabet camp for the displaced in the Qanawis district of Hodeidah Governorate.”

The statement added that this disease “is caused by larvae that penetrate the skin and cause inflammation and itching.”

It reported that the organization is providing treatment to 89 families consisting of 623 individuals, in response to a request from local health authorities.

The statement indicated that ” MSF team conducted 206 consultations, including 67 consultations for skin infections, and conducted health education sessions for more than 473 people to reduce the spread of the disease and improve livelihoods.”

The organization distributed aid, including rubber shoes, mosquito nets, and hygiene supplies such as soap and water containers, to all affected families, according to the statement.

This comes as diseases continue to spread in Yemen, including cholera, measles, dengue fever, and malaria.
