Yemeni, US, and UN Officials Stress Need for Increased Pressure on Houthis to Achieve Peace

Yemeni government officials, in meetings with UN and US envoys, emphasized the need to exert more pressure on the Houthis to achieve peace in Yemen.
Yemeni Foreign Minister Shae’a Al-Zendani held separate meetings with US Special Envoy for Yemen Tim Lenderking and UN Special Envoy for Yemen Hans Grundberg on the sidelines of the 20th Manama Dialogue regional security forum.
During his meeting with the UN envoy, Al-Zendani urged Hans Grundberg to exert pressure on the Houthi group to succeed in efforts aimed at achieving peace in Yemen.
The foreign minister affirmed the Yemeni government’s keenness to engage with all regional and international efforts aimed at ending the war and achieving peace in Yemen, according to the official Saba news agency.
The foreign minister pointed to the importance of the international community exerting pressure on the Houthi group and its actions and violations against the Yemeni people, as well as its continued escalation in the Red Sea, which poses a threat to freedom of navigation, international trade, and regional security and peace.
For his part, the UN envoy pointed to the efforts he is making to de-escalate, end the war, and achieve peace in Yemen within the framework of a comprehensive political process under the auspices of the United Nations.
During his meeting with the US envoy, Foreign Minister Shae’a Al-Zendani accused the Houthi group of evading the commitments of the stalled peace process in war-torn Yemen.
Al-Zendani affirmed the Presidential Leadership Council’s keenness to achieve peace and end the war, pointing to the Houthi group’s evasion of its commitments and its threat to maritime security and international trade in the Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb.
For his part, the US envoy affirmed his country’s keenness to support the efforts exerted to end the war and achieve peace in Yemen.
On Thursday, the US State Department announced that US Special Envoy Tim Lenderking would travel to Bahrain, Qatar, and Djibouti to discuss confronting Houthi attacks in the Red Sea.
The US State Department said in a statement that Lenderking would visit Manama, Bahrain, Doha, Qatar, and Djibouti from December 5 to 12.
It added that Lenderking would meet with partners to coordinate efforts to confront the reckless attacks launched by the Houthis on shipping in the Red Sea, noting that the international community’s patience has run out in the face of the Houthi group’s continued provocations.
It explained that he would hold discussions with officials, civil society representatives, UN and international humanitarian aid workers, multilateral organizations, US military personnel, and members of the Yemeni diaspora.
According to the US State Department statement, Lenderking would meet with government officials and their counterparts, UN officials, international humanitarian aid workers, multilateral organizations, US military personnel, and members of the Yemeni diaspora.
