ASPIDES: Crew of Cargo Ship Rescued in Red Sea

Yemen Monitor/ (Reuters)

The European Union Naval Force in the Red Sea (ASPIDES) has announced that the crew of the Panama-flagged cargo ship “M.V. S.A. Star” has been rescued in the Red Sea after sending out a distress signal.

In a statement posted on Facebook, ASPIDES said: “All crew members aboard the M.V. S.A. Star have been rescued and will be transferred to Djibouti, the nearest safe port.”

The statement added that the ship had reported a leak in the engine room and the captain had requested assistance, forcing the 20-member crew to abandon ship.

A source in maritime security told Reuters that the ship had experienced engine problems, while another source mentioned an internal explosion.

Details about the current status of the ship are not yet available.

Sources indicated that the ship was approximately 100 nautical miles from the port of Hodeidah in Yemen when it requested help.

The Houthis, allied with Iran, have been launching attacks on international shipping lanes near Yemen since November 2023, which they claim are in support of Palestinians in the ongoing war in the Gaza Strip between the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) and the Israeli occupation.
