Rights Organization Calls for Pressure on Houthis to Stop Brutal Operations in Taiz
Yemen Monitor/Newsroom:
SAM Organization for Rights and Liberties stated on Monday that the shelling carried out by the Houthi group on a popular market in the city of Taiz on Sunday, December 1, which resulted in civilian casualties, highlights the ongoing violations committed by the group against civilians.
In a statement, the organization reported that the armed group targeted a popular market adjacent to Umm Al-Qura School in Al-Bumiyyah area of Maqbana district, west of Taiz, with a drone on Sunday, December 1, killing six civilians and injuring eight others, some of them in critical condition.
The statement added that this incident highlights the ongoing violations committed by the group against civilians, which necessitates serious action by the international community, including the establishment of effective mechanisms to monitor and document violations, and holding the perpetrators accountable.
SAM reviewed a video clip circulated on social media platforms, in which eyewitnesses confirmed that a drone came from the direction of Houthi-controlled areas and dropped a bomb on the crowded place, denying the presence of any military points in the targeted area.
The organization affirmed that such violations are not an isolated incident but rather part of a continuous pattern of attacks launched by the Houthis, leading to more civilian casualties, including children and women. It pointed out that the Houthi group had previously targeted a school in the Al-Hnayneh area west of Taiz with a drone on October 23, resulting in injuries among students, according to activists, and on September 12, the child Muhammad Hussein Muhammad Bajash (10 years old) and the child Ibrar Muhammad bin Muhammad Bajash (7 years old) were injured as a result of shelling with mortar shells launched by the Houthis on the village of “Hadiyyah” located in the rural area of Maqbana district, west of Taiz, according to state media.
The organization expressed its strong condemnation of this crime, calling on the Houthi group to stop its brutal behavior and indiscriminate attacks that lead to the killing and wounding of innocent people, stressing that the continuation of these violations constitutes a flagrant violation of international law, including the Geneva Conventions, which prohibit targeting civilians.
The organization called on the international community to establish effective mechanisms to monitor and document violations, and to act seriously to hold the perpetrators of these crimes accountable, in addition to exerting pressure on the Houthis to stop these brutal operations, warning that the continued escalation of the conflict only leads to a worsening of the humanitarian situation and increases the suffering of Yemenis who are already suffering from multiple crises.
