WHO Reports 280 Measles Deaths in Yemen
Yemen Monitor/Newsroom:
The World Health Organization (WHO) announced on Wednesday that it has recorded 280 deaths from measles in Yemen since the beginning of 2024.
The WHO’s Yemen office stated that “the country is facing an outbreak of vaccine-preventable diseases, including polio, acute watery diarrhea, cholera, measles, diphtheria, malaria, and dengue fever.”
In a statement, the office added that “since the beginning of this year, 33,000 suspected measles cases have been reported, with 280 deaths attributed to the disease.” It further noted that this comes “amid a worsening food security crisis in Yemen, where nearly half of all households are now struggling to get enough food.”
According to the same source, “the WHO has signed a €3.4 million agreement with the German government to maintain life-saving health and nutrition services in Yemen.”
Yemen is facing a prolonged emergency of the highest level, according to the WHO’s classification.
On July 10, the Yemeni government announced a 70% decrease in international funding for the health sector.
