UN Official: MASAM Project Contributes to Securing Vast Areas of Yemen from Mines

Antony Hayward, the military advisor to the UN envoy to Yemen, praised the pivotal and important role played by MASAM project, affiliated with the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center, in protecting Yemenis.
During his visit to the project’s headquarters in Ma’rib Governorate, accompanied by a UN delegation, Hayward affirmed that the project has contributed to safeguarding the lives of civilians and securing vast areas of Yemeni land, despite the challenges posed by mines to the lives of civilians.
Hayward emphasized the importance of continuing such humanitarian projects to achieve stability in Yemen and protect the lives of civilians.
The UN military advisor and his accompanying delegation listened to a brief presentation on the center’s successes and its role in eliminating many threats against civilians in a number of Yemeni governorates.
Ritief Horn, Deputy Director-General and Director of Operations at MASAM, reviewed the project’s work in Yemeni lands since its inception in mid-2018 until now, explaining that MASAM teams have managed to clear and remove 469,576 mines, improvised explosive devices, and unexploded ordnance.
Horn affirmed MASAM’s unwavering commitment to enhancing security and safety in its operational areas.
It is worth noting that MASAM project has managed to clear 61,862,742 square meters of Yemeni land, which was booby-trapped with mines, ammunition, and improvised explosive devices planted by the Houthis in various fields, valleys, mountains, and Yemeni roads, causing the deaths of hundreds of children and women, especially shepherds and displaced people fleeing Houthi crimes.
