United Nations: Yemeni Children at Risk of Disease, Malnutrition, and Violence
Yemen Monitor/Newsroom:
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Yemen announced that 9.8 million Yemeni children are in need of humanitarian assistance.
In a statement coinciding with the International Children’s Day on November 20th, the UN office said, “In Yemen, 9.8 million children need one or more forms of humanitarian assistance.”
It added that in its tenth year of conflict, Yemen continues to face a major protection and humanitarian crisis, with children paying the highest price.
The UN statement pointed out that children are more likely to live in poverty, are not enrolled in schools, and are particularly vulnerable to disease, malnutrition, and violence.
On Tuesday, the UN’s “Education Cannot Wait” fund announced a grant of $5 million to support education in Yemen.
The statement added that the escalating challenges related to conflict, climate change, and forced displacement have led to 4.5 million Yemeni children being out of school.
The UN has repeatedly complained about the decline in humanitarian funding for Yemen, which has led to a reduction in the size of aid and harmed various segments of society, especially children.
