Yemeni Fishermen Break UAE Blockade, Return to Sea
Yemen Monitor/Newsroom:
After eight long years of being prevented from fishing in the Arabian Sea by UAE forces, dozens of Yemeni fishermen from the coastal town of Shihr, Hadramout, have finally returned to their livelihood. This comes after the UAE imposed a ban in 2016, citing security concerns following the conversion of Al-Riyan Airport into a joint military base, according to middle east monitor citing Yemen press Agency .
Despite repeated appeals, protests, and sit-ins, the fishermen were denied their right to fish, causing significant economic hardship for local communities heavily reliant on the fishing industry.
Recently, activists shared videos showcasing the jubilation of fishermen as they returned to the sea along the eastern province’s coast. Additionally, fishermen have staged numerous protests, including a sit-in that was attacked with a hand grenade, injuring several individuals.
Most recently, on Saturday, hundreds of fishermen blocked a major coastal road between Al-Mukala and Al-Mahrah province, demanding an end to the UAE-imposed ban. Their determination to reclaim their livelihoods and provide for their families is evident in their persistent efforts.
