STC Threatens to Overthrew Presidential Leadership Council

Ahmed Obeid Bin Dagr

Yemen Monitor/ Aden/ Special:

A prominent leader in the Southern Transitional Council (STC) on Tuesday described the newly formed national political coalition in the temporary capital of Aden as a “mangy rat” and threatened to withdraw from the government and overthrew the Presidential Leadership Council.

Nasser al-Khabji, head of the political bureau and negotiations unit at the STC, wrote on X: “A workshop that ended with the birth of a mangy rat in a hostile environment.”

Al-Khabji considered what he described as a “mangy rat” to be targeting the UAE-backed STC.

He added: “It poses a danger to the wall of consensus and partnership with the STC, which can no longer be sustained after the birth of this mangy rat, so-called United Yemen parties.”

Al-Khabji said, “Continuing on this path means nothing but the beginning of the end of this partnership, which will inevitably lead to the fall of the government, the Presidential Leadership Council, and the supporting bodies.”

The STC holds three seats in the Presidential Leadership Council and has several portfolios in the internationally recognized government based on agreements that guarantee the STC’s representation in the government in exchange for integrating the council’s forces into the ministries of defense and interior. The STC has rejected integration and restructuring plans.

Al-Khabji continued: “Continuing to ignore the principles of consensus threatens to undermine political gains, endangers the process of stability, and opens the door to chaos that could undermine the gains and alliances achieved to confront the Houthi militias.”

Aden witnessed the launch of the national political coalition on Tuesday, which includes 21 political parties and components and is headed by Ahmed Obeid Bin Dagr, the Speaker of the Shura Council and former Prime Minister.

Bin Dagr said that the seats of those he described as “hesitant” to join the coalition are vacant and will not be filled by anyone else.
