Disposal of over 40 tons of expired medications in Taiz
Yemen Monitor/ Taiz:
The Ministry of Industry and Trade in Taiz Governorate today destroyed more than forty tons of expired medicines that were seized in some of the governorate’s merchants’ warehouses, in the presence of the director of Taiz’s sanitation and beautification fund.
The director of the sanitation and beautification fund, Aftehan al-Mashhari, said that more than forty tons of expired medicines had reached the landfill, and the fund was not a member of the drug disposal committee, but the landfill team informed her of the large quantities of medicines, which necessitated her presence to dispose of them properly.
Al-Mashhari added, “For the sake of Taiz, the sanitation fund was keen to ensure that the disposal process was carried out properly and in a way that minimized environmental risks, by crushing the quantity with a bulldozer, burning it, and burying it in the presence of representatives from the Ministry of Industry, the Drug Authority, and the manufacturing company.”
Al-Mashhari stressed the importance of the sanitation fund being included in the committee, as it is responsible for the landfill where materials, whether medicines or otherwise, are disposed of.
Al-Mashhari called on the Ministry of Health in Taiz to establish a large incinerator within the landfill to dispose of expired medicines and medical waste in a proper manner that does not pose catastrophic environmental risks to the city of Taiz.
