Yemen Monitor/ Newsroom

The city of Mukalla, the capital of Hadhramaut Governorate, witnessed angry nighttime protests on Monday, protesting against the power outages and the deterioration of basic services in the governorate.

A local source said that Al-Mukalla witnessed popular unrest, burning of tires, and the blocking of main roads in protest against the deterioration of basic services, primarily electricity, and demanding an improvement in the governorate’s conditions.

He confirmed that the riots and chaos came in protest against the collapse of the electricity system, which has reached more than fifteen hours per day.

The General Administration of Electricity in Coastal Hadhramaut issued a statement explaining the reasons for the increase in the number of hours of power outages in Al-Mukalla and its suburbs, which affected various areas and cities in Coastal Hadhramaut.

The institution indicated that the electricity system is witnessing a deterioration and an increase in outage hours due to a shortage of operating fuel, which has led to the shutdown of generating stations, and the resulting generation deficit has caused problems in transmission lines and distribution networks.

The 132 kV transmission lines coming from the central Riyan power station to Mukalla city were damaged, which caused the station to go out of service since this morning.

Technical teams have been working since morning to repair the damage in the 132 kV transmission lines in order to restart the central Riyan power station and enhance the generation capacity. These efforts are aimed at reducing power outage hours and alleviating the suffering of citizens.

The protests in Al-Mukalla came after a continuous power outage that the city has witnessed over the past few days, leading to a rise in public anger.
