G7 Defense Ministers Call on Houthis to Cease Red Sea Attacks

Yemen Monitor/Newsroom

G7 defense ministers today called on the Houthi group to immediately halt its escalatory actions that increase instability in the region and to immediately release the ship Galaxy Leader and its crew.

During a meeting in the Italian city of Naples, the G7 ministers called on the armed group to stop its attacks in the Red Sea.

They also called on Iran to refrain from providing support to the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas, the Lebanese Hezbollah, the Houthis, and others.

The G7 meeting comes amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, as the Israeli occupation army continues its operations against Hezbollah in Lebanon and its strikes on the Gaza Strip following the martyrdom of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar in a direct confrontation with Israeli soldiers.

The Houthis have targeted more than 190 commercial ships with missiles and drones since the start of the war in Gaza in October. They seized one ship and sank two in the campaign that also resulted in the deaths of four sailors.

The US-led coalition forces have also intercepted other missiles and drones in the Red Sea or failed to reach their targets, which also included Western military vessels.

In response, the U.S. and Britain have been conducting an air strike campaign against Iranian-backed Houthi group since January 11. As a result, the Houthis announced the expansion of their operations to include U.S. and British ships.
