Yemen Monitor/Newsroom

Militias affiliated with the Southern Transitional Council (STC)have launched a broad campaign of arrests in the Yemeni archipelago of Socotra targeting tribal elders and figures who oppose the policies of the local authority loyal to the council.

Local sources reported that “security forces affiliated with the STC have threatened the island’s reconciliation and settlement committee, threatening to arrest and imprison a number of sheikhs.”

The sources explained that “the security committee affiliated with the governor loyal to the STC summoned a number of the island’s sheikhs, including Sheikh Saeed Amer Ahmed, head of the reconciliation and settlement committee formed by a group of Socotra sheikhs and notables, and informed him of an order to arrest him unless he signed a previously prepared document that stipulates adherence to the policies and orientations of the STC in the governorate.”

The security committee also detained other figures with the aim of silencing voices opposing the policies of the authority loyal to the council and subject to its directives to implement Abu Dhabi’s plans in the island.
