The United Nations Security Council will hold its regular session on the developments in Yemen on the coming Tuesday.
The UN Special Envoy, Hans Grundberg, and others are scheduled to provide briefings on various humanitarian, political, and economic aspects of the country.
On Thursday, the UN Special Envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, expressed deep concern about the impact of the escalation in the Middle East on Yemen and the peace process.
This came during the conclusion of the UN envoy’s visit to the Russian capital, Moscow, where he met with the Russian Deputy Foreign Minister, Sergei Vershinin.
A statement from the UN envoy’s office indicated that Grundberg expressed deep concern about the cascading effects of regional escalation in the Middle East on Yemen, emphasizing that international cooperation and diplomatic efforts are the only way to reverse the current worrying trajectory affecting Yemen, the Red Sea, and the region.
It noted that Grundberg provided a briefing on his contacts with the parties and regional interlocutors and the work being carried out by his office at the political, security, and economic levels.
The statement pointed out that both sides discussed ways to build on the parties’ commitments to the comprehensive peace roadmap for Yemen amid the current escalation environment.
The UN statement stressed the importance of maintaining Security Council consensus on Yemen and continuing efforts to cooperate towards de-escalation for the benefit of Yemen and the region.
The meeting also touched on the arbitrary arrest of UN staff, NGO employees, and civil society organizations by the Houthi group, while Grundberg appreciated the Russian Federation’s support for the UN envoy’s efforts aimed at the immediate and unconditional release of UN staff and other organizations from Houthi prisons.
