US special envoy for Yemen, Timothy Lenderking, discussed the ongoing conflict in Yemen and its impact on the population with Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein on Thursday.

The Iraqi Foreign Ministry stated in a press release that Lenderking arrived in Baghdad on an official visit of unspecified duration as part of his efforts to de-escalate the situation in Yemen and the region.

The meeting discussed the current situation in Yemen, the humanitarian and political challenges facing the country, and the impact of the ongoing conflict on the population.

Both sides also discussed “international and regional initiatives and efforts aimed at stopping the war and achieving stability,” according to the same statement.

The importance of providing urgent humanitarian aid to the affected population was emphasized, and current humanitarian projects were reviewed. The international community was called upon to increase its support.

Both sides stressed “the need for continued dialogue between all parties and encouraged the international community to support peace efforts in Yemen.”

In July of last year, Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein announced his country’s readiness to mediate between the warring parties in Yemen to end the long-standing crisis.

During a joint press conference with his Yemeni counterpart Ahmed Awad bin Mubarak in Baghdad at the time, Hussein explained that Iraq could utilize its “good” relations with the Yemeni government and the Houthis, who are close to Iran, to serve stability and security in the war-torn country.

The conflict in Yemen, which has been ongoing since 2015, has resulted in hundreds of thousands of deaths and has created one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world. However, it has witnessed relative calm since the 2022 UN-brokered truce expired in October.
