Grundberg: Lebanon events hinder peace in Yemen

Yemen Monitor/Newsroom

UN Special Envoy for Yemen Hans Grundberg told TASS on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly that recent developments in Lebanon are further destabilizing the Middle East and hindering a peaceful settlement in Yemen.

“The widespread escalation we have witnessed in the region for nearly a year now is destabilizing the Middle East as a whole. It also affects the resolution of conflicts and the ability to make serious and strategic decisions in the interest of the people of the Middle East and therefore it also affects our ability to achieve peace. So the recent development we are seeing in Lebanon is another part of this very worrying trajectory that I think needs to be reversed.”

On September 23, Israel launched a military operation called ” Northern Arrows” against Hezbollah in Lebanon, carrying out extensive strikes on the group’s military positions. The stated goal is to create a safe environment in areas near Israel’s northern border so that tens of thousands of people can return to their homes, after being forced to evacuate due to continuous shelling by Hezbollah since October 8, 2023.
