Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel-A’atty has affirmed his country’s rejection of the Yemeni crisis being used as a pretext for the involvement of non-Red Sea states in the region’s security arrangements.
The Foreign Minister made these remarks during a meeting with US Special Envoy for Yemen, Tim Lenderking, on Friday, as part of his ongoing visit to Washington, D.C.
Abdel-A’atty reaffirmed Egypt’s support for all efforts aimed at achieving a comprehensive political solution to the Yemeni crisis, in accordance with the Gulf Initiative and its implementation mechanisms, the outcomes of the National Dialogue Conference, and UN Security Council Resolution 2216. This solution, he emphasized, should meet the aspirations of the Yemeni people and bring an end to their humanitarian suffering.
He also underscored Egypt’s steadfast support for the unity, independence, and territorial integrity of Yemen, as well as its backing for the legitimate government in Yemen and the independence of its state institutions.
Abdel-A’atty highlighted the paramount importance of Yemen’s security and stability, as well as the security and safety of navigation in the Red Sea, to Egypt’s national security and the security of the Arab region and the Red Sea region.
The Egyptian Foreign Minister stressed the importance of the international community’s role in mitigating the escalating humanitarian crisis faced by the Yemeni people and providing the necessary support to fund UN relief programs in Yemen, noting Egypt’s support for relevant UN efforts.
He also commended Egypt’s efforts to provide various forms of support to the Yemeni people, particularly in the areas of medical and food aid.
