The UN Special Envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, said on Wednesday that he had held a frank and constructive discussion with officials in Tehran.

This came at the end of his visit to Tehran, during which he held talks with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi and senior Iranian officials and a number of diplomats.

Grundberg congratulated Minister Araqchi on assuming his new position and expressed his hope to strengthen regional cooperation to support efforts to achieve a peaceful solution to the conflict in Yemen.

The Special Envoy highlighted a number of pressing issues, including regional developments that undermine mediation efforts. He also addressed recent escalations in the Red Sea, noting the broader security concerns and the potential destabilizing consequences for the region. Grundberg stressed the urgent need to resume the path of constructive negotiations, affirming that dialogue is the only sustainable way to achieve peace and stability in Yemen. He also emphasized the importance of coordinated regional and international efforts to push Yemen towards a comprehensive and lasting solution to the conflict.

Grundberg said, “I have had frank and constructive discussions with officials in Tehran. Joint efforts are necessary to overcome the challenges posed by the conflict and to ensure a peaceful settlement that meets the aspirations of the Yemeni people.”

He added, “Throughout all the meetings, I was keen to ensure that supporting the Secretary-General’s urgent call for the release of all detained colleagues was one of my top priorities. They must be released without delay to enhance the hope and trust necessary to move forward.”
