27 Killed in Flash Floods in Wasab , Northern Yemen

Yemen Monitor/Newsroom

The Houthi armed group announced on Saturday that 27 people had died and six others were injured, with dozens missing, as a result of flash floods that swept through the Wasab district in Dhamar governorate, south of Sanaa, on Friday.

Anis al-Asbahi, spokesman for the Houthi-controlled Ministry of Health, said that the disaster forced dozens of families to flee their homes, especially after a small dam burst in the area, with heavy rainfall continuing to fall on the region.

In a related context, the affected residents of the area issued a distress call, stating that the heavy rains had caused a water barrier to collapse, leading to an intensification of the floods and the sweeping away of houses in al-Jarf village in Bani Musa district, displacing more than 21 families from the area.

Al-Asbahi confirmed that the health authorities in Sanaa are closely following the situation and working to provide the necessary medical care to the injured and displaced, calling on citizens in the affected areas to exercise caution and follow safety instructions issued by the relevant authorities.

He indicated that coordination is underway with the concerned authorities to provide urgent assistance to the affected and displaced families, stressing the need for concerted efforts to address the repercussions of this natural disaster.

Yesterday, Friday, the death toll from floods in Hodeidah governorate, western Yemen, rose to 84 people, while the United Nations said today that 18 million people in Yemen are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance.

Since the beginning of August, the rate of rainfall has increased in several governorates, resulting in the deaths of dozens of people due to floods and accompanying lightning, and affecting nearly a quarter of a million people, especially those living in displacement camps, according to government, UN, and Houthi statistics.
