UN Envoy Hans Grundberg stated on Friday that he had recently conducted a series of discussions in Aden, Muscat, and Riyadh, focusing on the issue of arbitrarily detained UN staff and the urgent need to facilitate the rescue of the damaged oil tanker, Mv Sounion.

His office, in a statement released on Friday, explained that the discussions also covered recent developments, economic challenges, and ongoing efforts to de-escalate the conflict in Yemen.

The statement emphasized that the focus was on supporting efforts to achieve a ceasefire, stressing the need to prioritize the interests of the Yemeni people and achieve a lasting and comprehensive peace (without announcing any specific results).

Grundberg also stressed the urgent need for a broader de-escalation across the country, as well as addressing ongoing challenges.

Earlier, Grundberg had visited Riyadh and held talks with the Saudi Ambassador to Yemen, Mohammed al-Jaber, focusing on exploring ways to provide coordinated and effective support to the Yemeni parties to achieve a ceasefire.

He also held meetings with representatives of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, emphasizing the need for a unified international approach to support the political process and achieve a ceasefire in Yemen.

He called on all parties to prioritize the interests of the Yemeni people, considering constructive dialogue as the foundation for achieving a ceasefire and paving the way towards peace.

Grundberg renewed the Secretary-General’s urgent call for the immediate release of UN staff detained by the Houthis in Sana’a.
