Yemen and Russia agreed on Tuesday to strengthen and develop bilateral cooperation in the scientific, technical, cultural, energy, agricultural, and fisheries sectors.

This came during an official meeting held in the Russian capital, Moscow, between Yemeni Foreign Minister Shae’e Al-Zandani and his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov, according to official Yemeni news agencies.

The Yemeni Foreign Minister affirmed that Yemeni-Russian relations are witnessing positive developments through the formation of a joint committee, the activation of a number of bilateral agreements, and the tendency to sign new cooperation agreements in various economic fields.

Minister Al-Zandani reiterated the Yemeni government’s keenness to develop cooperation prospects with the Russian Federation for the benefit of both friendly countries, commending the Russian government’s position in supporting the Presidential Leadership Council, the Yemeni government, and people at the international level, and its efforts to achieve peace in Yemen.

Minister Al-Zandani indicated that the ongoing escalation by the Houthis in the Red Sea and the targeting of international shipping lanes has negatively impacted international trade and the global economy, and even threatened the marine environment due to the continued targeting of ships and oil tankers.

The Yemeni minister stressed the need for strong stances by the international community and support for the Yemeni government in its efforts to end the war and achieve peace.

For his part, the Russian Foreign Minister affirmed the solidity of Russian-Yemeni relations and his country’s keenness to strengthen areas of bilateral cooperation between the two countries in various fields.

The two sides agreed to enhance and develop bilateral cooperation in the scientific, technical, cultural, energy, agricultural, and fisheries sectors, and the convening of the joint committee between the two countries next month, which was agreed upon during the visit of Yemeni Prime Minister Ahmed Awad bin Mubarak to Moscow last February.

The Russian Foreign Minister indicated that Russia has decided to increase the number of scholarships for Yemeni students to study in Russia in various fields and specialties

Following the meeting, a joint press conference was held for the two ministers, in which they discussed bilateral relations and common issues and positions related to developments and the latest developments in Yemen and the region.

On Sunday, the Yemeni Foreign Minister held talks with the Russian chargé d’affaires in Yemen, Yevgeny Kudrov, on enhancing defense cooperation between the two countries, as well as educational and military technical fields and the exchange of expertise.

Earlier, Yemeni Defense Minister Mahsen al-Daeri held talks with Russian Deputy Defense Minister First Lieutenant Alexander Vasilyevich Foemin, discussing enhancing defense cooperation between the two countries, as well as educational and military technical fields and the exchange of expertise.

This series of meetings came after Russia’s withdrawal from delivering missiles and military equipment to the Houthis in Yemen in late July, following behind-the-scenes efforts by Saudi Arabia and the US to stop the delivery of the shipment.
