Houthi media outlets announced on Saturday that a Yemeni fisherman was killed by Eritrean forces in Yemeni territorial waters.
The Houthi-controlled News Agency “SABA” reported that a Yemeni fisherman named “Saeed Ali Abdu Ghaffari” was killed on Thursday evening by Eritrean forces in Yemeni territorial waters.
The internationally unrecognized Houthi foreign ministry called on Eritrea to respect the rights of its neighbors and abide by the arbitration tribunal’s ruling, urging it to stop targeting Yemeni fishermen while they exercise their natural and historical right to traditional fishing.
Yemeni coast guard reports indicate that fishermen are subjected to a range of violations, including targeting marine resources, assaulting fishermen, and being pursued by Eritrean military forces.
Local statistics and reports show that the Eritrean navy has carried out more than 7,000 kidnappings of Yemeni fishermen from Yemeni territorial waters in the Red Sea since 2015.
It is worth noting that Eritrea previously occupied the island of Greater Hanish in 1995. After regional and international mediation to resolve the dispute, the international arbitration committee issued its first arbitration decision in 1996, and negotiations continued until 1998, ending with the Yemeni government officially taking over the island of Greater Hanish.
In 1999, the maritime border between the two countries was demarcated with a single maritime border line based on base points on the eastern coast of the Republic of Yemen and the western coast of Eritrea.
