“Presidential Committee” to Address Hadhramaut’s Demands
Yemen Monitor/Aden/Exclusive:
Head of the Presidential Leadership Council, Rashad Al-Alimi, announced on Tuesday the formation of a presidential committee to look into the demands presented by tribal components in Hadhramaut Governorate (eastern Yemen).
The official news agency (Saba) said that the presidential committee will look into the demands of the people of Hadhramaut “and submit proposals for their solution in accordance with the law, based on the commitments and understandings announced with the local authority and the political components in the governorate.”
The presidential committee includes nine figures from officials, ministers, tribal, religious, and military figures.
The committee consists of “Dr. Salem Ahmed Al-Khanbashi, ministers Salem bin Brik and Tariq al-Akbari, Sheikh Saleh Salem al-Amri, Sheikh Abdullah Saleh al-Kathiri, Major General Abdul Rahim Ahmed Atiq, Sheikh Marouf bin Abdullah Ba Aboud, Sheikh Saleh bin Omar al-Sharifi, and Dr. Muhammad Salem Bahabry.”
Al-Alimi directed the committee to carry out its tasks fully for the best interests of the people of the governorate and to enhance the role of its local authority.
Hadhramaut Governorate in eastern Yemen has witnessed increasing tensions as a result of popular and tribal demands to achieve the governorate’s rights, which coincided with Al-Alimi’s visit earlier this month.
The alliance has set up checkpoints in the governorate and banned the export of oil from their areas, which coincided with accusations against the local authority and the internationally recognized government of failing to provide basic services, including electricity. It also coincided with a strike by teachers in Al-Wadi districts.
