Human Rights Watch: The Israeli Attack on Hodeidah is a War Crime
Yemen Monitor/News Room
“Human Rights Watch” stated on Monday that the Israeli airstrikes on the Yemeni Port of Hodeidah on the evening of July 20, 2024, constituted an attack that is presumed to be indiscriminate or disproportionate, violating the law and potentially having long-term effects on millions of Yemenis who rely on the port for food and humanitarian assistance.
The organization noted that the Israeli airstrikes, which killed at least six civilians and injured at least 80 others, struck more than twenty oil tanks and two cargo cranes at the Hodeidah port in northwestern Yemen, as well as an electricity station in Al-Salif district of Hodeidah. The attacks are presumed to have caused disproportionate harm to civilians and civilian objects.
It added that grave violations of the laws of war committed intentionally, whether deliberately or negligently, are considered war crimes.
Yemenis are already suffering from widespread hunger after a decade-long conflict, and these attacks will only exacerbate their suffering.”
The Hodeidah port is critical for delivering food and other essentials to Yemeni populations that rely on imports.
On July 20, the Israeli occupation Air Force launched raids on the Houthi-controlled port of Hodeidah, killing and injuring dozens.
