Houthis Claim to Down US Drone and Target Ship in the Gulf of Aden

Yemen Monitor/Newsroom

The Houthi armed group announced today, Sunday, that it had downed an American MQ-9 drone in the airspace of Sa’ada Governorate (the group’s main stronghold) in the north of the country.

The group’s military spokesman, Yahya Saree, said in a press statement that the drone was shot down using a domestically-produced surface-to-air missile.

This is the seventh drone of its kind to be downed since the group began operations in support of Gaza, according to a statement by the group’s military spokesman.

In another operation, the group’s military spokesman said that they “carried out a joint military operation targeting the ship (Groton) in the Gulf of Aden with a number of ballistic missiles, and the strike was accurate.”

On Saturday evening, the British Navy said that a commercial ship had been targeted by a missile in the Gulf of Aden hours after a small explosion was reported near the same ship, for which the Houthis in Yemen were blamed.

The Houthi group has been attacking commercial ships in the Red Sea for months, saying it wants to end Israeli attacks on  Gaza Strip, which followed the attack carried out by the Palestinian Hamas movement on October 7.

In response to the attacks in the Red Sea, the US and Britain carried out several military strikes against Houthi positions in Yemen, and the EU launched a military operation to protect commercial shipping in the Red Sea.

On July 20, the Israeli occupation launched its first aggression against Yemen by carrying out airstrikes on the Yemeni coastal city of Hodeidah. Israel confirmed the attack, while the anti-Houthi Yemeni government condemned the attack.
