Concerns over Socotra’s Inclusion on the ‘List of Endangered Heritage’

Yemen Monitor/ Marib/ Exclusive:

Yemen’s Ambassador to UNESCO, Mohammed Jamhi, warned on Thursday of the possibility of Yemen’s Socotra Island being placed on the list of endangered heritage.

In an X post, Jamhi stated that the UNESCO World Heritage Committee opened a file on Socotra during its meeting in New Delhi, adding, “There is a possibility of placing it on the list of endangered heritage.”

He attributed this possibility to “unregulated urban expansion, increased construction, intensive fishing, and the introduction of non-native plants that have impacted the island’s flora.”

He emphasized that this is a “warning bell before a classification decision is made.”

Socotra Island is one of the most extraordinary natural treasures on Earth, garnering significant global attention due to its unique biological and cultural attributes. It was inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 2008 in recognition of its exceptional value.
