Saudi Arabia and Germany discussed on Tuesday efforts to de-escalate tensions in the Red Sea and bring peace to Yemen.
Tobias Tuekner, Director of the Middle East and North Africa Department at the German Foreign Ministry, said he had discussed with Saudi Arabia’s ambassador to Yemen, Mohammed Al Jaber, the right strategy to de-escalate tensions in the Red Sea and bring peace to Yemen.
He stressed that the talks focused on the need to contain violent actors and extremist ideologies, and to prevent the further spread of instability in the region.
The meeting comes two days after an Israeli airstrike targeted Hodeidah port in response to a Houthi drone attack on Tel Aviv that killed one person and injured several others.
Israeli warplanes on Saturday targeted oil storage facilities at Al-Hodeidah port in western Yemen, and the power plant at Hodeidah city port, killing 6 people, wounding 83 others, and leaving 3 missing, according to Houthi-affiliated sources.
Since November 2023, the Houthis have continued their attacks in the Red Sea, the Arabian Sea, and the Indian Ocean, reaching the Mediterranean Sea, against Israeli ships or those linked to them against the backdrop of the war in Gaza.
