US CENTCOM announced at dawn on Friday the destruction of 5 boats and 3 drones belonging to the Houthi group in the Red Sea.
“Over the past 24 hours, US Central Command forces have successfully destroyed 5 Iranian-backed Houthi unmanned boats in the Red Sea,” CENTCOM said in a statement.
It added that its forces also destroyed “three Houthi drones, two of them in the Red Sea and the third in an area under their control in Yemen.”
“The boats and drones posed an imminent threat to the US, coalition forces and commercial ships in the region,” it said.
“Actions are being taken to protect freedom of navigation and make international waters safe and more secure,” it added.
Earlier on Friday, British maritime security firm AMBRY said a commercial vessel had reported two explosions about 21 nautical miles west of Mokha in Yemen.
The ship said one rocket landed in the water while another exploded in the air, noting that the explosions occurred half a nautical mile from the ship.
In a memo from AMBRY, the company said the ship did not activate its Automatic Identification System (AIS) at the time.
For his part, Houthi leader Abdulmalik al-Houthi on Thursday announced the targeting of 166 ships linked to “Israel”, the US and Britain since last November.
